15 July 2025 – Confucius Institute at ¹Ï×ÓTV (¹Ï×ÓTV), Leicester
The Confucius Institute at ¹Ï×ÓTV (¹Ï×ÓTV) commemorated a significant milestone on 15 July 2025, hosting a vibrant celebration to mark its 11th anniversary and to bid a fond farewell to its dedicated volunteer teachers. The event, held on campus, served both as a tribute to more than a decade of UK-China cultural exchange and a heartfelt acknowledgment of the volunteer teachers’ contributions over the past year.

Distinguished guests from ¹Ï×ÓTV, partner institutions, and the Confucius Institute gathered for the occasion. Among the speakers were Professor Katie Normington, Vice-Chancellor of ¹Ï×ÓTV; Professor Simon Bradbury, Director of ¹Ï×ÓTV CI and Professor Yi Zhang, Co-Director of ¹Ï×ÓTV CI. A special video message was also delivered by Professor Renshu Yang, President of the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), a long-standing partner of ¹Ï×ÓTV CI.
In their remarks, the speakers reflected on the Institute’s accomplishments in Chinese language education, cultural outreach, and academic collaboration. They praised the tireless work of the volunteer teachers, whose dedication has been instrumental to the Institute’s success.
A memorable highlight followed the speeches: a symbolic gesture in which the three attending dignitaries placed their hands on a digital screen, igniting a virtual fireworks display and unveiling the message “Happy Birthday”. Guests and audience members then joined in a joyful rendition of the birthday song, adding warmth and festivity to the atmosphere.

The celebration continued with a rich programme of cultural performances. “The Grace of Chinese Traditions” featured an elegant fusion of tea art, traditional music, and calligraphy, offering a sensory journey into Chinese heritage. A group performance of the beloved folk song Jasmine Flower by teachers and students added further charm to the occasion.
Guests also took part in a hands-on DIY session, creatively decorating canvas tote bags with the cheerful phrase Shēng Kuài (a playful expression of “Happy Birthday” in Chinese). This interactive activity offered participants a fun and immersive way to engage with Chinese culture.
A live calligraphy demonstration captivated the audience, with the artist sharing the meanings and inspiration behind each piece—an artistic moment that drew enthusiastic applause.
The farewell ceremony for the departing volunteer teachers was filled with emotion and gratitude. All volunteer teachers shared personal reflections on their time at the Institute, recounting memorable experiences and friendships formed. Certificates of appreciation were awarded in recognition of their contributions, and farewell speeches were delivered with heartfelt sincerity. The ceremony concluded with a moving group performance of Auld Lang Syne, leaving the room filled with nostalgia, gratitude, and warmth.

As the Confucius Institute at ¹Ï×ÓTV looks ahead to its next chapter, this anniversary celebration not only honored its past achievements but reaffirmed its commitment to cultural dialogue and educational exchange. Guided by the mission of “language as a bridge, culture at the heart”, the Institute continues to expand its role in connecting communities and enriching lives through shared learning and cultural understanding.
