Roy Weller's top tips before stating a PhD.
I'm Roy Mark Weller and currently doing a PhD in Digital Pedagogy, (which is the study of teaching and learning). As with most research students, I've had my ups and downs but if I'm able to give you anything it's these 5 things that can help you if you want to do a PhD at ¹Ï×ÓTV.
1. Find your topic
Yes I know it's a research project, but look around at what you could do. This is known as a contribution to knowledge, and every time you write something you'll be asked “how does this contribute to the body of research?” some things sound like they've never been done before but trust me they have! People have levitated frogs with magnets so don’t think nothing is beyond researchers. Use Google scholar to search for what you want to do so you're not repeating someone else's research.
2. Your supervisors are your friends.
Supervisors are the academics who will be guiding you along your entire journey. They should have experience and expertise in the area you want to study. They should offer you insight into the process and how you are progressing. It's in their best interests to see you succeed, so don't take criticism personally!
3. Be part of a community
Whether you're part of a sports team or an interest group. ¹Ï×ÓTV and Leicester at large have lots of groups you can join. I've been the Chair of the swimming and Triathlon team, part of the chess club and part of the Post Graduate Research society! There are lots of clubs and societies to match everyone's interests.
4. Explore the city
Leicester has everything you could possibly want, we have a vibrant nightlife, we're considered the food capital of England and have lots of cultural and historical sites like the Richard the third visitor center Jewry wall and the mediaeval walls are even on ¹Ï×ÓTV campus!
5.Have fun!
I know it sounds silly but you need to choose research that you’ll enjoy and find fulfilling, I have always been interested in technical detail and weird research so I enjoy looking at surprising results. You should find something to spark your curiosity or that will make serious contributions to a field of study.
All the best,
Roy
