¹Ï×ÓTV Leicester (¹Ï×ÓTV) is celebrating another major sustainability milestone after being named a finalist in the International Green Gown Awards 2026.
Led by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), the awards recognise higher education institutions making a real and measurable impact on environmental and social challenges around the world.

¹Ï×ÓTV's shortlisting places it among a select group of universities demonstrating global leadership in sustainability, following its success at the UK and Ireland Green Gown Awards 2025, where it was named Sustainability Institution of the Year.
The university has been shortlisted once again in the Sustainability Institution of the Year category, recognising its long-term commitment to embedding sustainable practice across its curriculum, operations and campus.
Karl Letten,Head of Sustainability at ¹Ï×ÓTV, said: “¹Ï×ÓTV is committed to addressing sustainability across all our operations and activities including teaching and learning, managing our campuses and engaging our staff and students.
“To have our work in this area recognised through the International Green Gowns is a real reflection of the great work that takes place across the institution by our staff and students to create a more sustainable university.”
Since 2018, ¹Ï×ÓTV has worked closely with the United Nations to embed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the university, bringing together leadership, staff and students to drive coordinated action on sustainability.
¹Ï×ÓTV is currently the UN Academic Impact SDG Hub for Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, having previously led the hub for SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. In this role, it works with an international network of partners on major urban challenges, including affordable housing, air pollution, clean water, sanitation and renewable energy.
The university’s approach was recognised at the UK and Ireland Green Gown Awards 2025, where judges praised ¹Ï×ÓTV’s leadership on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and its success in embedding sustainability across strategy, teaching, research and estates.
Sustainability runs right across ¹Ï×ÓTV’s teaching, operations and partnerships. More than 600 staff and students, including senior leaders and governors, have now completed carbon literacy training, with the programme also extended to partner institutions in Denmark, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Kazakhstan.
That work is reflected in ¹Ï×ÓTV’s latest Sustainability Report, which shows a 65 per cent reduction in direct and indirect carbon emissions compared with its 2005 baseline, alongside ongoing work to enhance biodiversity across its campus.
The approach continues to grow globally through the opening of ¹Ï×ÓTV London, where new UN-inspired master’s programmes are helping develop the next generation of responsible leaders.
The recognition reflects ¹Ï×ÓTV’s ongoing commitment to turning ambition into action and making real progress towards a more sustainable future.
The International Green Gown Awards winners will be announced later this year at an annual ceremony bringing together finalists from around the world, both in person and virtually, to celebrate global leadership in sustainability.
